Pioneer of the Week: Jo Booth of Social Media Makes Sense

1. Tough question. Everyone that knows me would mention how much I talk... I’m sort of known for my ability/weakness is to talk, to anyone, about anything, nonstop.

2. I love to help people and that means our business focuses on how we can help people, wherever it’s through Corporate Social Responsibility or simply helping a start-up hit the ground running, we like to help!

3. I’m driven and like to challenge myself. For example, I’m dyslexic but I also now blog for some of the biggest brands; I have written for Virgin Media, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Sage and more.


Tell us about your business. How did it start? Did you set it up alone or with a team?

Social Media Makes Sense was started to help businesses understand and fully utilise their Social Media Marketing potential. We offer training and management services to SME’s and TV shows (random pairing, we know!). We started the company about 3 years ago as I was presenting (for another business) a lot at universities on how young people should protect their reputations online. The more I spoke, the more businesses wanted us to do the same with their employees. The company was founded by my mum and I as we’d previously been working together and our skill set really complimented each other; she has a marketing and PR background and I have a training and media background.


What do you love most about running your own business?

The freedom to grow, to know that everything you do (or don’t do) directly impacts your life, and the thrill of doing something new. I think I have created the best job in the world for myself. I get to help people develop their businesses, work on TV sets, present, and play on Facebook all day - what’s not to like?

Tell us about a challenging experience you’ve faced in the process of starting up your business and how you overcame it.

Every day is a challenge to be honest, it’s part of running a business, if it’s easy then you’re probably not growing. Each day presents new problems and challenges and it’s creating solutions that helps us grow, develop and grow from strength to strength. The best way of finding a solution, I have found, is to ask mentors, ask your teams and even ask clients. The more ideas flow, the more solutions are created; often there’s more than one great answer to your problem.


What advice could you give to other startups about starting up in your industry?
Continuously learn. Social Media is so fast paced and ever changing. In order to deliver good Social Media solutions, you must be on top of these innovations. Read articles, look at what other’s are doing and research ideas every day.


Can you share an experience that really helped you take your business forward?

I can't think of one particular experience but I can certainly say that the more I told people about what I wanted to do and how I wanted our business to be different, the more people came out of the woodwork to help, promote and encourage us. We got our first two major clients from word of mouth! 



Many people start their businesses at home, where do you work? What do you love about it?

We started our business from home and then we progressed into renting a small room in a friend’s house! We now we have a lovely office with 2 staff.


What do you know now, that you wish someone had told you when you first started?

Don’t under sell yourself, know your worth. However, don’t expect to be paid at an expert level, until you’ve earned it. Many businesses start and WAY undervalue themselves but others launch with hugely inflated prices. Pitch yourself at YOUR worth and what you need to make the business work for you and your clients.
