GEW Competition: Announcing the winner!

We asked the entrepreneurs who attended our #GEW2016 masterclasses to hone their recently acquired knowledge and skills from our small business experts to show how they will make their business #VOOM in November. We asked attendees to upload the pledges they made at our masterclasses and to update us on their progress over the 2 weeks following the event. The winner who demonstrated the most progress was promised a prize of £2,000!

Thank you to all the great entrepreneurs who entered. It’s been a tough decision because all the entrants showed so much passion about improving their business. Some of the achievements included securing a mentor, launching a website and using Instagram for the first time to build social media presence to name but a few.

We now have a winner who blew the judges away with their commitment and ambition for taking their business to the next level.

Congratulations Emeka and Ifeyinwa Frederick of Chuku’s!

The brother and sister duo who run the world’s first Nigerian tapas lounge got a lot of work done in November. Take a look at the pledges they made following GEW and their achievements in the 2 weeks since...

Pledges made:

  1. Tell their story to a national and international audience.
  2. Redesign their brand.
  3. Better engage their customer community.
  4. Create a network map.

  • Networked with the journalists to arrange meetings and got featured in the biggest news and entertainment magazine in Nigeria, Bella Naija.
  • Used the advice from Emma Sexton on working with designers to find a consultant and redesign their brand.
  • Harriet Minter inspired them to plan a consistent and regular newsletter for their mailing list.
  • Used the advice of Samantha Clarke to create a relationship map on Excel, identifying who the main support system is for their business.

Co-founder Emeka took time out of his busy schedule to tell us how happy he is to win:

"We have been working hard all year to grow the business but these last couple of months we really dug deep to push ourselves to set Chuku's up for an even better 2017. Winning the Virgin Media Pioneers competition is humbling recognition for our efforts. £2,000 will go a long way in setting up our first ever permanent site. It feels like Christmas has come early!"

Watch this space to find out how Chuku’s found completing their challenges in an article later this week. We’ll also be catching up with them in January to see what impact the prize money has made on their business.

Make sure you send them your congratulations on our community forum.
